The Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

Friday, September 5th, 2008

A coworker recently approached me to ask if her sister would be allowed to book a massage, even though she is six months pregnant.

Of course! There is really no better time. I replied.

Pregnancy massage is a wonderful way for mothers-to-be to relax, rejuvenate, and release some of the stress that their bodies are under for those nine months. While the massage obviously feels fantastic, there are many other benefits.

The benefits of pregnancy massage (also known as prenatal massage) are in many ways similar to that of standard Swedish massage. These benefits include but are not limited to:

Encouraging muscle relaxation and tension relief

Reducing heart rate and blood pressure

Increasing blood circulation and lymphatic flow, therefore encouraging the body to release stagnant wastes held in the tissue

Promoting deeper breathing, and an overall sense of well being

Fostering faster repair and healing of stretched or strained muscular tissue

Strengthening the immune system by encouraging the body to maintain or return to homeostasis (optimal balance in which the body best fights injury or illness)

Satisfying the need for a nurturing touch

Other reported benefits from women who have experienced massage during pregnancy include:

Fewer obstetric and postpartum complications

Reduced premature birth rates

Shorter or less painful deliveries and less days spent in the hospital

Reduced swelling in the hands and feet

Less lower back and sciatic pain

Decreased instances of postpartum depression and anxiety (due to fewer stress hormones in the blood)

While any healthy, pregnant woman is able to receive massage, there are some precautions the massage therapist must observe to ensure that their client is safe during and after the massage. Since the womans body is in a state of such physical and hormonal change, massage is limited to the second and third trimesters. This does not mean the woman cannot receive any spa services during her first trimester. The Heads Up Massage, a facial, or a manicure are all great ways to de-stress during this time.

As with any massage service, the massage therapist should be alerted to any prescient health issues. This is especially important during pregnancy. Circumstances in which pregnancy massage should not be performed include high blood pressure, diabetes, fever, unusual abdominal pain or vomiting, or any malignant condition. Varicose veins and swelling are other conditions the therapist should be made aware of prior to the massage, though the service can still be safely performed in spite of these. Some standard precautions the therapist will take include abstaining from deep pressure and avoiding heat so as not to take blood away from the fetus. Certain pressure points on the body and feet will also be avoided since they are connected with promotion of early contractions and labor. While taking precautions before, during, and after pregnancy massage is important, most clients will have no problems; they can relax and enjoy the massage free from worries.

Pregnancy massage at a good spa is designed to accommodate the expectant mother at any stage during the second and third trimester. Prior to the massage, the therapist will prepare the treatment room specifically for the mom-to-be. Special pregnancy cushions are utilized to allow the mother to lay on her back and on her stomach, no matter how far along she is. For the expectant mother, this in itself is a luxury. The therapist will instruct the client on how to lie on the cushions so as to ensure complete support and comfort. Once the massage is in progress, the therapist will pay special attention to any areas of tension or discomfort developed during or even before the pregnancy. This is the perfect time to take a deep breath, enjoy the feeling of nurturing touch, and let the stress melt away. Often, Soft music, dim lighting, and warm linens allow the mother to unwind and relax in her environment.

While receiving one massage during pregnancy is certainly beneficial, treating yourself to an hour of massage once a month, or even just two or three times prior to giving birth, can do wonders for the health of mother and child. Pregnancy massage is a beautiful process a delight for the mother-to-be, and an honor for the therapist.

Aroma Therapy Massage - Why Should You Have One?

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Using essential oils for an Aromatherapy Massage has become very popular in the west in recent years.

It is easy to understand why, not only do the oils have a wonderful fragrance that one gets enveloped within during the massage, the oils also have medicinal properties.

The oils, being distilled from aromatic parts of plants, such as flowers, bark, leaves or roots are very complex chemical compounds, believed to contain the \”essence\” of the plant.

While many of the oils have balancing effects on our systems such as, respiratory, digestive, circulatory and hormonal, they also have anti viral, anti fungal and anti microbial effects.

While some massage therapists may use the oils for their physical properties, they also have a profound effect on the mind.

Inhaling the aroma puts it in direct contact with the brain, via the nose. Modern imaging techniques will show the different oils have different effects on different parts of the brain.

Oils that are considered to be calming are: Lavender, Chamomile, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Mandarin, Geranium.

Uplifting, energizing oils are: Peppermint, Basil, Ginger, Cardamom, Black Pepper

Some oils to gain a sense of peace: Neroli, Frankincense, Melissa, Spikenard, Yarrow

When scheduling an AromaTherapy Massage a good question to ask is if the oils are selected for you personally. While there are many blends already pre made for a variety of uses, having your blend selected based on your body, and your mind can make a real difference.

Before your massage, do not overindulge in caffeine or a heavy meal. Make sure you have some time to relax after your aromatherapy massage. Do avoid showering for the reminder of the day, allowing the oils to continue being absorbed through your skin.

Alcohol Withdrawal Reduced by Means of Alternative Therapeutic Treatments

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

An exciting topic of interest in the field of Massage Therapy is case studies, which have and are being performed to research the affects of massages and its ability to improve alcohol detoxification.

In the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine a case studies objective was to validate or disprove the hypothesis, that had not yet been adequately researched, that Massage Therapy could reduce the symptoms people experience during alcohol detoxification. The setting was in Royal Brisbane Hospital Alcohol and Drug Services, in the detoxification division.

1. Patients:
\r Each patient received shoulder, neck, and head massages in a sitting position for 15 minutes.

2. Control Group of Patients:
\r Were given counsel to rest for 15 minutes a day.
\r
\r 3. Objective Measurements:
\r Pulse rate
\r Respiration rate
\r Alcohol Withdrawal Scale
\r And a questionnaire assessing their feelings at the end of treatment
\r
\r 4. Results:
\r 3 out of the 4 days the pulse rate of the massage group was significantly reduced in comparison to the control group.
\r Respiratory function, at end of treatment, was greater in the massage group,
\r Evidence provided both groups reduced their scoring in the Alcohol Withdrawal Scale, however the massage group was significantly better.
\r
\r 5. Interesting Findings:
\r Patients were more engaged in the treatment during detoxification in the massage group.
\r A vital time of treatment is after day 1, which is suggested, The initial period of detoxification is physically demanding and increasing patient comfort at this time is important.
\r Patients in the massage group felt more supported, safe and increased appetite.

Overall, patients experiencing the withdrawal symptoms of alcohol detoxification found it easier and showed greater physical improvement who received the massage therapy. Massage Therapy is a natural and proven alternative to lessen symptoms and increase the level of engagement in the detoxification program.

Could A Massage Chair Help My Aching Back?

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Yes, a massage chair could help your back considerably, as the rollers built into the chair can actually relieve tension and loosen the muscles by stretching them.

This can amazingly ease soreness and stiffness and do so in a very short time. Most people find a pleasant rejuvenating effect from sitting in a massage chair for even 15-30 minutes.

These chairs can cost from about $700 to $5000, but most feel they are well worth the money.

Spending thousands for a massage chair is economical, especially if the alternative is lots of money on massage therapists.

Massage chairs can be small with just a few different programs or they can be the more expensive models with as many as 8 programs plus an extensive manual operation. Both preprogrammed and manual operations are usually controlled on a remote, which is very easy to use.

Having a massage chair at home where you can use it every day to relieve tension and soothe aching muscles could be one of the best investments you make.

You can choose operations on the remote for stretching, compression, kneading, rolling and sometimes tapping. Some say it feels like a massage therapist is working you over.

Stretching muscles by having a chair roll and knead across your body is a great way to ease soreness and sometimes even relieve spasms, as well as stress and tension.

Massage chairs today can be very high tech products that truly improve mobility and posture making you more productive at work and play and actually rejuvenating your whole body. I use mine every day.

For 10 years I have been an ergonomic consultant and have been helping people achieve a better back. I hope you like the articles and will click on the ads, which are full of good information about helping achieve a better back. Thinking About A Career As A Massage Therapist, Here Are A Few Things To Consider

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Tired of having a dead-end low paying job? Or do you hate sitting behind a desk doing other peoples dirty work? You have been wanted to find a new career, one that will not only provide a decent income but one where you could set your work schedule and interact with different people all the time. You have had a massage in the past and thought that this might be a possible career change for your future.

Massage therapists work in a variety of different places and can be self-employed or work for others and they are found everywhere today; in private offices, studios, hospitals, nursing homes, fitness centers, sports medicine facilities, airports, and shopping malls. Some self-employed massage therapists also provide at home service to their clients and it is common for them to divide their time among several different settings, depending on the clients and locations scheduled. Massages are given in dimly lit rooms on special tables. Many like to use candles and soothing music to help the customer relax and to be put at ease.

Because this profession is physically demanding, massage therapists must be trained in the proper technique and in most states, they are required to complete a training program that is accredited by a State board or other agency-these accreditations vary from state to state. Most of the boards governing massage therapy require practicing massage therapists to complete a formal education program and pass the national certification examination or a State exam. Some State regulations require that therapists keep up on their knowledge and technique through continuing education.

They are usually training in several areas including a general knowledge of the body systems; detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology; pathology; therapeutic massage assessment; therapeutic massage application; and professional standards, ethics, business and legal practices.

Massage therapists may want to take the national certification examination for therapeutic massage and bodywork. The exam is administered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Some States require that a massage therapist pass this test in order to practice. In states that require accreditation, a candidate must graduate from a State-licensed training institute with at least 500 hours of training or submit a portfolio of training experience for review.

The most frequent problem is repetitive motion and fatigue from standing for extended periods of time. This risk of injury to the massage therapist can be limited by the use of good technique, proper spacing between sessions, exercise, and by receiving a massage from other therapist.

The physical requirements of the job and because time needed in between sessions is essential, massage therapists usually work less than 40 hours per week. Therapists who give massages anywhere from 15 to 30 hours per week usually consider themselves to be full-time workers.

If this is what you want to do, make it happen. Find a school, enroll in classes and pass the accreditation test. You will be able to get a job as a massage therapist almost anywhere. And, clients are never a problem as more and more people are learning about the benefits of receiving a great and relaxing massage.

Massage Therapy Programs - Career Training Opportunities Today

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Find Massage Therapy Programs in the United States and Canada. Presently, students have many diverse massage therapy programs from which to choose. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are about 1,300 massage therapy programs throughout the United States alone.

In typical massage therapy programs, training begins with anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, range of motion, business and ethics. Because there is such a wide variety of massage techniques, massage institutes and schools often differ in instructional methods. For example, base training in massage therapy programs usually includes practical instruction in Swedish massage, deep tissue massage and sports massage. However, several healing arts schools offer expanded variations of these techniques with additional training in other natural healing modalities.

While most massage therapy programs range from 300-500 hours, a number of these courses exceed 1,000 training hours. Students who prefer to examine unique massage methods find that elective and focalized training is available. For instance, were you aware that there are over 60 styles of massage therapy? In addition to traditional bodywork therapies like sports, deep tissue and Swedish massage, students can enroll in massage therapy programs that provide training in specific modalities like acupressure, Trager therapy, Thai massage, reflexology, polarity therapy, prenatal massage, myofascial release therapy, canine/equine massage, chair massage, Tuina, Lomi Lomi, Structural Integration, and Zero Balancing, among several others.

Successful graduates may be eligible to take an exam through the NCBTMB (National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork) to become nationally certified. Requirements for taking this exam include a minimum of 500 hours training from one of a number of accredited, state-approved massage therapy programs.

Health insurance companies are beginning to cover natural healthcare treatments provided by qualified massage therapists. This, along with the fact that massage therapy is gaining in popularity, are some of many excellent reasons why prospective students may wish to enroll in any one of several massage therapy programs to achieve gainful and rewarding employment as professional massage therapists.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in finding massage therapy programs let professional training within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Explore career school programs near you.

Avoid Burnout and Infuse New Energy into Your Massage Practice

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

As workers in any profession grow accustomed to their daily routine, they may unknowingly fall into a rut. For massage therapists who typically run their own practices, its especially important to keep this from happening. There are some simple things you can do to prevent a slump from happening to you, but first you must know how to recognize the onset of one.

Do you feel overly comfortable in your practice? Have you stopped trying to acquire new clients? These are two telltale signs that a business slump may be approaching, but if you act quickly, you can cut it off before it hits you and your practice. Continue to seek out new clients; dont rely only on current ones for a steady source of income. And dont overwork yourself; book only as many sessions as your body can handle each day. As a massage therapist, your body is your business, your livelihood. Keeping yourself healthy allows you to provide your clients the best service possible.

Many people experience some type of slump in their business. Whatever the reason may be, if you want to climb out of this rut you must be proactive. This may translate into expanding your skills to include additional modalities you hadnt previously offered. Most state massage boards and national organizations require continuing education for license renewal. While you may have used that requirement in the past as a chance to brush up on your current area of expertise, why not branch out into a new subject area and learn some new techniques instead? Not only will your current clients enjoy these new skills of yours, but you can also use them to lure new clients, meaning new business and more income. Of course, you dont want to spread yourself too thin, so take this expansion one step at a time.

Experienced therapists may be more likely to fall into a business slump than those fresh out of school because theyve had more time to develop and become used to a routine. But that doesnt mean that new practitioners are immune, they too should be on the lookout. Read this full article here and learn how you can prevent the dreaded burnout from taking over your practice.

Six Massage Techniques to Remove Scar Tissue

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Many people have at least one scar on their body, whether its from a cut or burn, or a surgical incision. Since most scars typically blend into the skin, many people who have them may not even remember they exist at all, and probably dont think they can do any harm. Depending on the severity of the wound, a scar can hinder circulation in the area, posing health risks in the future. Bodyworkers can work with scar tissue to increase blood flow around the scar, making it softer and more pliable.

Massage therapists are sure to come across clients with all types of scars. Scars can be any shape or size, and develop anywhere on the body resulting from a burn or laceration. Some in the medical field believe that scar tissue can cause severe health ailments down the road, prompting the need for immediate attention to the scar.

Since scar tissue is formed over a wound, massage therapists must use extreme caution and a gentle touch when performing any type of massage on the area. Pregnancy Massage Managing Stress Of Child Birth

Monday, September 1st, 2008

An important aid to a pleasant pregnancy experience is pregnancy massage. As your pregnancy progresses and your stomach enlarges you experience physical aches and pains in different parts of your body. Relief to this pain can be provided only by massage therapists who specialize in prenatal massages. Massage relieves pain because it enhances the function of muscles and joints, improves blood circulation and relieves mental and physical fatigue.

The benefits of pregnancy massage are numerous. Under the stress of pregnancy your body produces stress hormones. These stress hormones are felt not only by you, but also your baby. By reducing your stress, through massage, you can increase the comfort level of your unborn baby. Moreover, the massage can ease your muscular aches and pains that may be very uncomfortable to say the least. But before deciding on massage therapy you should first consult your doctor to make sure that you are suitable for massage. You should be careful while going for pregnancy massage and only utilize the services of trained prenatal massage therapists. For prenatal massage, the massage therapist uses massage techniques which concentrate on woman neck, back and pelvic regions- the areas most often negatively affected by a pregnancy.

Another care to be taken while giving the massage is your position. Since you cannot lie on your stomach, you will most often be laid on your side with pillows for support. While there are special tables designed to allow room for a pregnant belly, most therapists prefer to have you rest on your side. Pregnant mothers are very sensitive and masseurs will need to be careful when giving massages as to not harm the baby in any way. To ensure this result intensity of the massage is also very important.

Since pregnancy massage is special, finding a therapist who specializes in prenatal massage might be slightly difficult. All therapists may not be able to accede to your request for massage. Some might not have the experience and some might not have time to accept you as a patient at all.

Experts in pregnancy massage recommend that pregnant women have a massage at least once a month. This is to keep them revitalized and ready for the actual birth. No matter how far you are from actual delivery of your baby, regular pregnancy massage is the best medicine to keep you and your baby healthy and happy.
